Fundraising Ideas
Affiliate Programs & Loyalty Programmes

If you have a website make it earn money for you. With advances in technology a new way to raise funds is to look at net-based programs. Affiliate programs are an arrangement in which an online merchant web site pays affiliate web sites a commission for sending them traffic. Affiliate Web sites post links to the merchant site and are paid according to an agreement which can be based on the number of people the affiliate sends to the merchant's site, or the number of visits that result in a sale.

Commissions earned can be very generous and little work is required on behalf of the site owner. Consider investigating affiliate programs such as DVD rental, educational, sporting, toys, grocery or everyday items where your organisation can earn income from the support of your members. This is a simple fundraising method for any organisation that has a web presence. The only time and effort involved is in creating the original link and asking your members to support the sites you are affiliated with.

Amusement Rides

If you want to attract large numbers to your event consider adding amusement rides. Rides are a must have for any fete and festival but they can also provide a good revenue stream at sports days, company picnics. Etc. Remember to book rides that are appropriate for the age group you are seeking to attract. Even something as simple as a jumping castle will ensure the youngest members of the community are catered for. Amusement rides are a must have for large events such as fetes or festivals. Most ride operators will operate on a commission basis or you can hire the rides yourself and keep all the profits that are made.

Quite often an even like this will be run annually and each year you aim to raise more than the previous year. The idea is to get sponsorship for how every many ‘athon’ things you complete – laps, kilometres, words, etc. There is quite a bit involved in putting together the sponsorship sheets, etc. You can do it yourself or you can have a company organise it for you. The profit returned from athons are excellent.

Auctions

There are several types of auctions which can be utilised for fundraising at fetes, trivia nights, etc. Sporting memorabilia is usually a very successful auction item. There are several different options for sourcing memorabilia. Write to various sporting clubs, sports stars or associations asking for a donation. You may be lucky enough to receive something, but don’t hold your breath.

Purchase sporting items such as team jerseys and organise with the club to have them signed. The club will often charge a fee for this service and it may cost you several hundred dollars to secure an item and have it framed, but this item may sell for two or three times your outlay. There are professional sporting memorabilia businesses that will sell you complete items, signed sporting memorabilia that has been famed and authenticated. These items are professionally finished and are much sought after.

Ask around at school – it is surprising how many people in a school community know a sporting personality. Check school records – there may be past pupils who are now big stars. With contacts within the school a lot of time and money can be saved sourcing these items. Most sports stars are happy to sign memorabilia for friends. Also look within the school community for framing businesses. A signed and framed State of Origin jersey can raise many thousands of dollars. Whatever items are sourced, ensure they are well presented and pay for professional framing. The end results will look spectacular.

Promote these items well before the event to draw a large crowd – a particularly coveted sporting item will bring in many extra people. Sport personalities may also be approached to attend the event. Check with sponsors, they may have connections with sports stars.

Promote the celebrity sports auction as the highlight of the event. Check out the sporting memorabilia section of this guide as well.

Apple Spirals (slinkies)

Apples are a great source of vitamins and nutrients for our kids but it is often hard to get them to eat the right things. Turn an ordinary apple into an apple slinky and you will have no problem getting them to eat apples. The amazing Apple Spiral machine will peel, core and turn your apple into a slinky in no time. The benefits of this machine are twofold – sell the machine to parents at a fraction of the price you can buy it for anywhere else on the net and make great profits and donate a machine to your tuck shop and watch the kids line up for their favourite fruit – and the tuckshop makes a great profit on the increased sales.

As the direct importer of these fantastic machines Catalina Trading can offer genuine low prices. These machines are offered at a substantial discount from retail prices. Offer them to parents at $30.00 and $35.00 for the green corer and the nickel plated machines respectively. That's $10.00 OFF the recommended retail price for each machine!

Badges

Badges are an ever popular item that can be designed for major events within your organisation. This can be done by having badges made commercially or by making them yourselves using a badge making machine. Money raised from this fundraiser could be used to purchase a badge making machine. Machines are readily available for hire, do an internet search under "badge makers" + your town.

As a simple school fundraiser, kids can draw their own picture for their badge. The uses for the machine are endless. Have badges made to promote a special event - your school's anniversary for example.

Balloons

An effective way to add colour to your event is to ask one of your major sponsors to provide custom printed balloons. Details of your event can be printed on one side and the sponsor's details on the other. When filled with helium and handed out, they provide a very eye-catching and popular way of promoting an event. Everybody wants a free balloon and people will walk around your event for hours happily carrying a balloon displaying a sponsor's name, but be sure to add a weight to the balloons. Your local balloon company can organise printing for you.

Fete balloons

Balloons add real colour and spectacle to any event - vending foil balloons can be very profitable at a school fete. They come in a variety of shapes and themes – Wiggles, Harry Potter, Dolphins, etc.

Small heart shaped balloons are a wonderful fundraiser leading up to Valentines Day. These balloons are very inexpensive to purchase and are filled with air. Children, especially at high school, love to buy them. Heart shaped balloons can be purchased from Make Believe.

Balloon Races

In the 60's and 70's balloon races were very popular. This type of fundraising event is no longer encouraged by the balloon industry for environmental reasons and in some states is illegal. Although balloons are biodegradable, the labels attached to them are not.

A variation on this is to sell helium filled balloons and encourage people to write a message on the balloon to a loved-one who has passed away. After writing the message, the balloon can be released. Many people find the idea of sending a message to a loved-one very therapeutic. It is a good fundraising idea for charities involved with illnesses such as cancer, where so many people have a loved one who has been affected by the disease. Use professional quality balloons and ensure that nothing is attached to the balloon. Balloons are biodegradable and cause no harm to the environment, but attachments are not. You can read more about environmental issues and balloons as well as finding suppliers for quality balloons at www.balloonartists.com.au. You will also need to check on the regulations for releasing balloons in your state. For example in NSW it is illegal to release more than 20 balloons at any one time.

They can be used to raise money for major items, to commemorate a time capsule, to acknowledge new buildings and they are especially good when your school or organisation has a special event to celebrate, like a special anniversary. You can create a special area to commemorate the event and raise money at the same time.

Carols by Candlelight

Carols by Candlelight are a wonderful Christmas tradition. Run a Carols by Candlelight at your school or church group and fundraise by selling SafeFlame candles. SafeFlame Candles are 6" candle shaped glowsticks, moulded with a 35mm flame tip, and filled with a 6-hour super bright mixture. All SafeFlame candles are filled with a triple enclosed casing improving transportation, glow duration, and product shelf life. Made to the highest quality standards with a sturdy construction technique of a one-piece mould, limiting any leaking and choking hazards. Unlike conventional candles that can pose a safety threat, no matter how well supervised, SafeFlame candles are 100% self contained and do away with all the issues associated with conventional candles. SafeFlame candles do not emit heat or sparks, and the contained light source will not drip hot wax onto floors, clothing, or skin.

In the interest of event sponsorship, local community businesses can advertise their corporate details along the shaft of a SafeFlame candle, acting as a cost saving measure to your event's budget. We can transform any SafeFlame candle into an effective advertising and promotional tool. The minimum quantity for printed SafeFlames is 500 candles with a surcharge of $0.20 per SafeFlame.

Being safe for all ages, SafeFlame candles provide children with a fun and safe novelty toy to play with during the event, allowing parents to relax and enjoy the night. As well as providing a safe alternative to conventional candles, SafeFlame also provides your event with an extra way to raise quick and easy funds. SafeFlame Candles can be sold separately, or with glow bracelets, to achieve profits of up to 75% for your organisation.

Cent Auctions

Cent auctions are a variation on silent auctions and are often used where your prices are of a lower value than those used in the silent auction. It is a very simple type of auction to run and you can make your stall look very attractive by displaying your prizes well

Your whole stall will be dedicated to displaying your prizes so make sure they are well wrapped and attractive. You will normally have several items grouped together to form a substantial prize, so group those prizes into a large basket, hamper, laundry basket or gift box, then wrap in cellophane and finish with large bows. Your prizes will look enticing and worth more than they actually are. Display your prizes at the back of your stall, clearly number them and have a list of the contents of that prize for people to view.

At the front of your cent auction stall you place a series of containers numbered to match your prizes. You can use ice cream containers for cheapness or if you want to make your stall more eye catching you can buy cheap cardboard gift boxes from dollar stores; cut a slit in the lid of your box. Make sure your boxes are big enough to take plenty of tickets. Your customers will use these boxes to place their bids and as cent auction stalls are very popular you can have large numbers of tickets in your bid boxes.

Tickets are sold in sheets, all bearing the same number with a stub that is retained by the purchaser. This stub is used to claim prizes and the rest of the tickets are the ‘bids’. The sheets are sold for a nominal amount - $1 or $2. Traditionally a sheet contained 100 tickets and was sold for $1, hence the name 'cent' auction. Your buyer can place as many tickets as he wants in each box - if there is one particular item he is after he can place all his tickets in that box, or he can spread them over all the prizes. Your local newsagent or party store will stock cent auction tickets.

It is a good idea to have a complete list of prizes and their approximate drawing times to hand out to everybody attending your event.

Have your cent auctions drawn progressively throughout the event. Start your draws with the cheaper items first. Have your most expensive prize as the last item of the day. Make sure the draw is announced so that people have the opportunity to place last minute bids. When the auction closes, the box is removed from the cent auction area and taken to the 'auctioneer' who draws a ticket from the box. The winning number is announced and the holder of that numbered stub is able to claim his prize. Remember that your event will only run for a limited amount of time, so ensure you allow yourself enough time between auctions to cover all prizes. Have your MC announcing draws throughout the event and get him to promote ‘the big one’.

You can add excitement to your event by having special spot prizes. Don't have these on display, rather have these announced by the auctioneer and then have volunteers pass through the crowd with a box collecting numbers (and selling tickets). A good auctioneer can really whip up some excitement this way for special items.

Make a list of each lot, itemise all the components of the prize and the lot number, and have these clearly displayed on your stall. It is important to show exactly what is contained in each lot. Cent auctions are a lot of fun, by starting with your cheaper valued prizes you will whet people’s appetite for the bigger ones drawn later in the event.

Caricatures

The Caricature King offers an amazing service – simply send him a photograph and he will turn it into a caricature. Here are several easy ways of fundraising with Caricature King:

1. Offer a simple caricature service – you provide the special link to our website where the customer orders and we pay you up to 25% (Around $4 per head/shoulders caricature - more for full body etc.) on the order value PLUS we may provide special discounts for registered entities (i.e school P&C (P&F), church groups, scout groups etc. This works very well with a group of people who can distribute the information through social and work networks via email or personal websites.

ACTION: Have the fundraising leader sign up to our affiliate program in order to get the link. The customer uses the link to buy. The earnings tally up and then are paid out to you. We have a low payout threshold.

2. Have a Portrait Day - For customers who may not have a digital image of themselves, organise a ‘Portrait Day’. This is where you take their picture (or accept a hard copy print for scanning - or even a picture of a picture ;) ) and payment, and you submit them through our system. The finished caricatures will then be emailed to you. You handle final delivery to the customer (by email again or on floppy disk). You can charge the customer a 10-30% premium for this service, thus leveraging your fundraising inflow.

ACTION: Have the fundraising leader sign up to our affiliate program in order to get the link (and the discount up to 25%). This link is then used to place the orders by the fundraiser (not the customer). The earnings tally up and then are paid out to you. We have a low payout threshold.

3. Value add with products – provide caricaturised products. Similar to number 2, except you may work in with a local supplier who can put the image on quality paper, a t-shirt, mug, frame etc. Again this offers the opportunity to further leverage funds by adding a percentage for taking the photo, plus a further percentage from the sale of the item (the supplier should give you at least a 10% discount).

ACTION: Same as 2.

Ice Ties

Ice Ties are a fantastic item that sell well as a stand alone fundraiser or as an item to sell at events on hot days - sports days, fetes, festivals and market stalls. Ice Ties will keep you cool on even the hottest day. You can feel cool and look great wearing an attractive Ice Ties neck scarf filled with hidden water-soaked crystals. Magic Ice crystals are safe and non-toxic.

Magic Ice crystals, are concealed in the casing of a cotton neck scarf. When the scarf is soaked in water, the granules absorb the water, expand, and turn into a crystalline gel. The cotton fabric absorbs water from the gel, then the water evaporates for a cooling effect. Scarves stay cool and moist for hours due to the crystal's water-retaining properties. Ice Ties work on the principal of evaporative cooling. Once the crystal is hydrated, the fabric surface of the Ice Tie draws the moisture from the crystal to the fabric surface, which evaporates resulting in an effective body cooler.

Ice Ties are a fantastic product to sell at sporting events, fetes, markets, in fact anywhere it's hot! Set them up on a stall on their own or combine with icy cold water for a really cool stall. Ice Ties are a fantastic fundraising item. They are inexpensive to buy and resell profits are high. Unlike chocolates, everybody wants an Ice Tie. Ice Ties come in a variety of colours and can be supplied in your school or club colours. Have them manufactured in your school colours and include in your school uniform range.

Microfibre Cleaning Products

Microfibre cleaning products are fairly new and revolutionary in most parts of the world. However for many years in Europe, people have enjoyed the benefits of microfiber cleaning technology! You can take advantage of these revolutionary cleaning products to fundraise. Some of the benefits of these remarkable products include:

A dry microfiber cloth will dust and polish surfaces. It uses a static force to hold the dirt and dust in the fiber. To clean with the microfibre cloths, wet the cloth, wring it out and wipe your surface. When wet, microfibre uses capillary force to suck water and dirt deep into the fiber. It is important to wring the cloth as dry as possible. If a microfiber cloth is dripping with water, it is too wet, and it could leave streaks on the surface you are cleaning.

Microfiber is hypoallergenic. It will not create problems for asthmatics or allery sufferers. Micro fiber is super absorbent, absorbing over 7 times it's weight in water. Microfiber towels dry in one third of the time ordinary towels take to dry. Microfiber cloths, mops and towels are environmentally friendly cleaning products, requiring no soap or chemicals of any kind. A micro fiber cloth is 4 times more effective than ordinary cleaning towels & cloths. It will clean virtually any stain from any surface, is longer lasting than other cleaning products and contains more fibers per square inch of product.

Microfiber cloths and mops used only with regular tap water are 99.94% effective in removing bacteria from smooth surfaces, compared with conventional cloths and mops used with Lysol or bleach, which were only 91.89% effective . A bacterial culture taken after a traditional wet mop cleaning showed only a 30% reduction to precleaning. The bacterial culture taken after the microfiber mop cleaning showed a 99% reduction. Microfiber is lint free and non-abrasive.

Using Microfiber will save you time, money, effort & water. Your home environment will be safer for children and allergy sufferers. As microfibre effortlessly picks up dirt, dust and hair and bacteria, your home will be cleaner than ever before. And at the same time, you can feel good about doing something to protect the environment from chemical pollution!

Money Tree

A money tree is a really novel way to raise money at a school fete, trivia night or any other fundraising event. It is simple to put together, cost effective and an attractive prize. You simply need to buy (or have donated) a small topiary tree in a nice pot. Buy a selection of Scratch It cards (select your own amount). You then punch a small hole in the scratch it card, pass a small piece of coloured ribbon through the card and tie it to the tree. Make sure they are placed evenly across the tree. You can also vary the idea by using dollar notes wrapped and tied with a small piece or ribbon, or gift vouchers. Make it seasonal by using a Christmas tree. You can use your money tree as a raffle prize, chocolate wheel prize, trivia night prize - the possibilities are endless.

Silent Auctions

Silent auctions are an ideal additional fundraiser to run in conjunction with a major event, ie ball, trivia night, school fete, the possibilities are endless. Silent auctions operate throughout the evening and do not interfere with the evening the way a public auction can.

There are many ways of customising a silent auction to your needs and here we outline the basics.

Firstly you will need to secure prizes for your auction. For schools you may be able to source many of these from businesses owned by parents. Also approach local business and sporting identities. Sports memorabilia is always a very popular item. Remember to give publicity to the organisations that have donated prizes.

Set aside one section of your room for the silent auction and use this area to display the prizes. Look for someone creative within your group to handle the display, make it exciting and eye catching, you want people to visit this area to view the prizes. Make sure you have cloths on the tables, add some pot plants to the display area, make it colourful and eye catching. Also remember that if your prizes have been donated you need to give publicity to the company or individual who has made the generous donation.

Bid cards

You can have these placed on a table in the area where the goods are displayed. (Click here for a sample bid card - this is a word document that you can edit to suit your needs. We suggest when copying you reduce to A5 size.) Here you can vary how you collect bids to suit your event. For example, at a ball you can have bid cards placed on each table and have volunteers collect them during the evening.

If you keep your bid cards in your silent auction area, you need to remind people to return to check their bids. If your bid cards were placed on tables, have your volunteers return regularly to the bidder to see if they wish to increase their bid. You will have more success if you work on your bidders to increase their bids.

You may wish to have a large board on display in your auction area showing the current highest bid.

With silent auctions you can set the times for the auctions so that they are continuous throughout the evening, depending on the number of items you have for auction, maybe every half hour. Make sure your MC announces the auction is about to close and encourage bidders to check that they still have the highest bid.

At the end of the auction, the highest bidder is the winner. Ensure that prizes are paid for and collected on the night. If you have high value items, you may want to ensure you have credit card facilities available.

Shaved Ice

Shaved Ice is much smoother and comes in a much larger variety of flavours than snow cones. It is a product that appeals to all age groups and is great to have at your next fundraising events, sports day or festival. Operators will set up everything that is needed and pay you a generous percentage of the day's takings.

School Fact File

The School Fact File is a simple easy to use folder that helps parents file all those pieces of paper and information that come with having a child. Every parent complains about the masses of paperwork sent home from schools and child care centres, from policies to newsletters, permission forms, certificates, rosters, fundraising activities, health information, party invitations, canteen lists, sporting activities and the list goes on. With the School Fact File you can have all that information on hand and organised ready for when you need it. No more piles of papers hanging around or last minute search for that elusive piece of paper. The School Fact File is self standing so you can keep it on hand and comes with everything you need to get organised.

The School Fact File was designed by parents for parents and will last your child’s entire education from preschool through to the end of high school. Made from sturdy, environmentally and print friendly polypropylene the file is completely washable. It is made to easily accommodate A4 paper and has numerous clear pockets for smaller items and keepsakes. Simply file papers as they come in, all the school, activities and health information will be in one place, on hand for when you need it. At the end of each term clear out what you no longer need or want to file away.

Everything to do with your child can be filed in one place so you can always find it. Doctors referrals, prescriptions, health books . . . Organised Minds would like to promote the School Fact File directly through schools, preschools and long daycare centres. Either as part of the enrolment process or as a fund raiser. Each school should earn up to 40% of the total purchase price. This is a similar return to selling doughnuts and chocolates but a lot healthier, a lot less fattening and with greater benefits to parents. A place for everything and everything in its place.

Shopping Tours

Shopping Tours are a great deal of fun and are run in most major cities. The tours generally visit factory outlets and discount stores. Your guests are given the opportunity to save huge amounts of money on every day items such as clothing, shoes, homewares, glassware, china and more. The tours are a whole day event and include lunch. Running raffles along the way boosts your fundraising dollars. There are many companies who run these tours and offer you assistance to make it a positive fundraising experience.

School Discos

School discos can be a big source of revenue for any school. For primary schools it is generally a good idea to run two discos - one for the grade 1 -4's early in the evening, followed by one for the grade 5 - 7's. Charge a reasonable entry fee and also sell simple food - hot dogs and hot chips are ideal, soft drinks and water. Glow sticks and LED products are also very popular and will make you good profits. Most children will buy one or two if the price is reasonable. You will need to have a reasonable number of parents available for security. Generally children are not allowed to leave the hall once the disco has started and must be collected by an adult.

It is essential that you book a DJ who is familiar with working with children. Bop till you Drop is Sydney and Melbourne’s leading Disco and Karaoke Company for children. Our professional disco entertainer will come to your rescue with a powerful P.A. system, spectacular disco lights and microphones for the children to sing all their favorite songs on. All you need to do is sit back and relax while we keep the children entertained with singing, dancing and various musical games. Ideal for schools, child care centers, birthdays, christenings, Hotel and RSL clubs.

Toad & Cockroach Races

Cane toads, cockroaches, whatever, we all hate the little so and so's - but what a great fundraiser they make! You can eradicate the pests and make some money at the same time.

BUT WE DO REMIND YOU, THEY ARE LIVING CREATURES AND YOU CANNOT ABUSE THEM.

What you need to race them is a field of runners. If you live in Queensland, you'll have no shortage of cane toads, if you live in NSW, you'll have no shortage of cockroaches - is somebody asking about Stage of Origin?

Gather up a decent number of the little b*****s. You will need to identify them - maybe make a little jacket for the canetoad, or mark with non-toxic face paint. You then offer these fine pedigrees for sale at auction. Once they have been purchased, you are ready to race. the new owner can take their purchase home with them after the races or leave them to be dealt with humanely.

Charge an entry fee for each race, and give a percentage of this back as prize money, say 25% for the first out of the circle and 10% for the last - the balance of the monies is profit for your charity.

A circle is an ideal race track. Mark a decent sized circle using a piece of string, a stake and some chalk - (we've all watched Burke's Back Yard). A diameter of about three metre is idea. Then mark a small circle inside the larger one - 50cm should be about right. Then you let the games begin. Keep your thoroughbred stallions in a bucket or calico bag, let them go in the inner circle and start yelling. They're off and racing ......

The winner is the first thoroughbred to break out of the big circle.

You can run several races over the course of an evening. Remember, it is highly illegal to run a book on any of these races and at the end of the night you must dispose of your thoroughbreds in a humane manner. The suggested method for cane toads is to place them in a plastic bag in a freezer, where they will simply fall asleep in the cold and eventually pass away. Cane toads are the biggest environmental pest ever introduced into Australia. they are slowly moving both north and south, sightings have already been reported in Kakadu National Park - an ecological disaster in the making.

So have some fun and do a bit for the environment at the same time. What about a sponsored toad hunt..... now there's an idea

Toys

Nobody can deny that toys are an item purchased for every child for birthdays, Christmas, special events, and educational purposes. You can use toys as a fundraising drive to earn valuable income for your organisation. By running a toy fundraiser you can earn a percentage of all toy sales. This is an excellent program to run in the last term of your school year to take advantage of Christmas sales.

Trivia Nights

Trivia or Quiz nights are great fundraisers. They are also a lot of fun and more profitable than most other activities. Trivia night questions should be designed so that at least 80 percent of the questions will be answered correctly and should also cover a wide variety of topics thus ensuring everybody will have a rewarding evening.

What you need to do

Depending on the amount of people attending you will obviously need to organise a venue which will cater for all of the people comfortably. The venue can be set up in any shape you wish bearing in mind the presenter will need a table at the head or front of the venue ( a small platform or stage is ideal). Teams of no more than 10 people should be encouraged. Small teams (eg: 4 people or less) should be encouraged to join ‘forces’.

A good, reliable P.A. system is required for the evening.

A portable whiteboard is ideal.

Aim to play at least 3 games played during the course of the evening and a prize needs to be awarded to each winner. The prizes need not be anything extravagant (a bottle of Champagne, a box of Chocolates or a book are some examples).

Award prizes for the teams which come first and second for the evening and again these do not have to be overly extravagant.( a small hamper of goodies or a small trophy per player usually does the trick) Remember, to provide at least one prize per team member. This of course is at your discretion - you may only wish to reward the winning table. The table which comes last could also receive a prize ( in good taste of course!).

Another effective means of raising funds is to run a raffle during the course of the evening. This is where, if at all possible, an attractive prize needs to be provided. The bigger the ‘carrot’ the more tickets will be sold. An effective way to run the raffle is to have two separate draws for the evening, leaving the big prize until last of course. The amount of draws will depend on the amount of prizes on offer. Tickets can be sold during the course of the evening.

Trivia companies can organise nights for you of supply you with kits to do it yourself.

How profitable is it?

Like all fundraising it depends entirely on how much effort you put in. While we do a lot of the background work, you need to enthuse your members to sell wine to as many people as possible. The amount of profit varies with different groups, but as a guide you can make up to $4.00 per bottle easily. Do the sums yourself! Selling 10 dozen bottles will make you around $500 profit. How many bottles can your members each sell? We have had many successful fundraisers over the previous few years. One secondary college in NSW was raising funds to send students on an overseas trip and sold 1600 bottles! Of course they are not all that big, and we are happy to work with any size group. We have no minimum quantities you must achieve. Most groups who raise money using Prospect Wines come back a second or third time because they are delighted with our professional service.
