StarChapter of April: Clark County AHU

Focusing on increasing membership value through member participation has proven an effective strategy for the Clark County chapter of the National Association of Health Underwriters. We spoke with Lydia A. Boske-Heater, Immediate Past President of Clark County AHU chapter, who shared some successful tips on chapter management, why having a solid software provider helps streamline and save time managing the chapter, and how cross-association collaboration can have a positive impact on chapter performance and leadership.


1. What was AHU Clark County’s strategy for engaging new members in the past year?
“The Clark County AHU (CCAHU) chapter began offering existing members a free annual guest pass to bring a guest to our monthly luncheons. The way this works is that on January 1, every member has one free guest pass to bring a colleague/vendor/friend who is a good candidate for membership at CCAHU. If that guest joins CCAHU at the meeting, the existing member regains the free pass to use for another guest. We have had approximately one dozen of our members use this free pass to date, but it has only been in effect for the last 3 months.”


2. Tell us about a successful event/meeting you organized last year.

“AHU Region VIII consists of six U.S. states: California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Alaska, and Nevada.  We hosted the August 2015 Region VIII Leadership Conference. Because there were people coming from many states who were not in our database, we used StarChapter to have people register online and make corporate donations. StarChapter helped us administer the entire budgeting process, which made tracking of all funds collected streamlined and easy. We found using StarChapter helped us with communicating and promoting the event.”


3. Do you get ideas on how to improve membership value from other AHU chapters? 

“Yes, NAHU, our Region VIII committees, and our State and local chapter leaders regularly meet for peer-to-peer conversations. Many ideas are shared at our Region VIII and National Conferences. We also review other chapter websites to get inspired about our own programs. Outside of AHU, we share ideas with our two other professional associations, NAIFA (National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors) and NIIA (Nevada Independent Insurance Agents) and include their leaders in our communications.”


4. Do you have any tips/advice to share with other board volunteers?   
“We found it is easier to start membership by volunteering on project such as golf tournaments, public service events, etc., then move onto a Committee to learn the ropes, and finally progress to becoming a Committee Chair. There are often times scholarships available to attend National NAHU meetings – and we encourage our members to take advantage of these opportunities. We also recommended chapter leaders to attend the StarChapter training or schedule an on-demand training to help them be more engaged with all the functionality the software offers. CCAHU believes in member engagement with the chapter by offering, for example, meetings with CE credits or inviting key leaders in the industry (such as the Nevada State Exchange director, the Insurance Commissioner or our lobbyist) or programs that teach important new trends (such as in social media and marketing), to bring additional value to the members who are business owners.”


5. What is in store for the members of AHU Clark County next year?  

“Our leadership plans on organizing more events, the 2nd annual Senior Sales Symposium, the Annual Charity Golf Tournament, additional Chapter meetings offering CE credits, and the 2016 Annual Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June. We encourage our members to stay tuned.”


6. How did StarChapter help you run AHU Clark County and reach its goals?

“StarChapter has been a godsend. We’ve been able to automate tasks and better track our registrations for meetings and have greatly improved the effectiveness of our communications. It has been a tremendous value for our Chapter. Whenever there is an issue with the system, which is rare, the support team is extremely prompt in helping us resolve the issue and does so with extreme professionalism.”
