StarChapter of June: St. Louis Paralegal Association

The St. Louis Paralegal Association (STLPA) is a non-profit association formed to promote the advancement of the paralegal profession in the St. Louis area through encouragement of high ethical and professional standards and to provide access to information and education for paralegals, and other legal professionals. Michelle Caracci, STLPA’s President, was able to take the time to share with us how they are engaging their members and continue to grow their association.

1. What was St. Louis Paralegal Association’s strategy for engaging new members in the past year?

STLPA engages all of our members throughout the year.  We offer continuing education sessions to enhance their professional development; signature events; and monthly meetings.  Some of our members are students and we offer a mentoring program to help them become acclimated in the legal community. Our goal is to make sure our members know that this is their association and that we encourage them to be involved on any level that they can and want to be.

2. Tell us about a successful event/meeting you organized last year.

Every year our governor and area county/city executives declare our Annual Paralegal Day in May.  Our planning committee works tirelessly to ensure that our members and guests are able to learn from our speakers and also network with our members, guests, vendors and Business Partners.  We have a great group of supporters and it is the culmination of that support that makes this day amazing every year!

3. The St. Louis Paralegal Association network is extensive. Does the board get ideas on how to improve membership value from other chapters?

We do not have other paralegal associations that we have been able to glean from.  However, we do have a local legal association that is extremely supportive of our endeavors so that has been beneficial.  Also, we make sure to survey the members and see how we can improve what we are doing.  So far, our efforts have been successful and we continue to grow.

4. Do you have any tips/advice to share with other board volunteers?

It is a lot of work so it is very easy to feel overwhelmed at times.  Our board is a great team and we have found that as long as we are truly doing what is in the best interests of our association, then we continue to grow and exceed our expectations.

5. What is in store for your members this year?

We have had a lot of changes this year (all very good) and I think that we intend to build on our existing accomplishments and make sure we are giving back everything we can to our members.

6. How have been able to utilize StarChapter to run St. Louis Paralegal Association and reach its goals?

Being able to register online and communicate and interact with our members via cohesive emails and surveys certainly makes it easier for us to track our progress.  StarChapter has been invaluable in helping our association to become more engaging with our members and with our online presence in general.
