Get Your Members In Like a Lamb, Out Like a Lion
Updated: May. 19, 2015 | Categories: Member Communications

Have you ever heard the saying about the month of March? If it “comes in like a lamb” it is supposed to go “out like a lion,” and vice versa. The saying may refer to local weather; however, it can be true for association events as well.
Meeting and conferences are a great opportunity to take lackadaisical members (lambs) and turn them into lions, filled with energy and a confident roar.
Here are some ways to be sure your members leave meetings inspired.
Have an interactive element to each meeting.
Whether it is an ice breaker that includes moving around the room or just a time for questions and answers, having an interactive piece to each meeting is essential. Getting attendees’ blood flowing through movement is a great way to have members feel involved.
Something as simple as asking attendees for questions or examples keeps the event from feeling like a one-sided lecture.
Provide education that can be applied immediately.
Education is an important aspect of all associations. To get members feeling motivated, be sure to include an educational tidbit which can be applied as soon as they leave the meeting.
Is there an app they can download to make a part of their day a little easier? Or perhaps share a leadership or personal skill they can put into practice immediately.
Include something members are excited to try as soon as they walk out the door.
Save time for networking.
Networking is a terrific element to include in each meeting. Members benefit by creating new connections and finding out about new opportunities.
The great part about adding networking to a meeting is the meeting planner only needs to make time on the agenda. No need for preparation, other than perhaps coming up with a suggested question to get people talking.
When other items on meeting agendas start to run over allotted time, networking is an item that tends to get cut to end a meeting on time. To avoid this issue, try having the networking at the beginning of each meeting.
In addition to handling administrative association tasks, meetings are meant to be valuable to members. When you include an interactive aspect to each meeting, providing immediately applicable information and prioritizing networking, your members will leave fired up.
