Hosting a Virtual Golf Event – It Can Be Done

Hosting a Golf Event

For most chapters, golf is a way of life. It’s a fundraiser, a networking event, and a chance to get outside and bond with other chapter members, to interact with people you might not talk to at a monthly meeting or conference. And, whether your members are grumbling because your annual golf event is on hold or you’re looking to add more virtual events to your lineup to meet the needs of your members spread over a large geographic area, a hybrid outdoor/virtual golf event might just be what your members need.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Set the tournament to occur between certain dates.
  2. Select several courses of similar difficulty in your chapter’s geographic area and work with the courses to set up the particulars.
  3. Set up your event on your website so players can register and pay online.
  4. Communicate the rules for the event on your website and in your email communications.
  5. Once registered, players contact the golf course to arrange a tee time for their group during the time period you’ve set.
  6. Each small group plays their round. After the round, they submit their scorecards to the golf course, who in turn, forwards them to your chapter volunteer.

Time for the virtual part of the event

After the final date for your event, scores are posted in your chapter forum. But that’s not where things end. Schedule an online Zoom (or other virtual platform) meeting to have an MC reveal the results, present awards, and thank your sponsors. Have some fun with this and ask players to take pictures of their teams and the event and post them in your forum.

As you would with a regular golf tournament, you can sell sponsorships. Sponsors can receive recognition on your website, in your communications, and during the virtual ceremony. Ask them to provide chapter t-shirts or other types of swag and awards for the winners.

Whether you’re looking to get your members interacting but need them to be socially distant or you’re looking for events that can cover a large area, a virtual golf could be just what your chapter needs.
