As a new board member /Treasurer Secretary, it has been a learning curve for me to understand the Star Chapter and how this works. I feel like this is going to be very helpful. I believe it is a very useful platform to use, but like me there will be many who may not be familiar with the platform. How do we help them understand the incidental issues that come up?

I remember being new to StarChapter and finding it overwhelming to learn it.I found the webinars SC produces a great value to me. I also made time to familiarize myself with the Knowledgebase. https://kb.starchapter.com/index.php. This tool is awesome and the videos are really easy to following along. If your chapter has funds available you may also consider hiring someone to manage your website on your behalf. Or pay for 1:1 trainings. Overall, I think communication is your best bet. Reassure new board members that they won't learn everything there is to know quickly, but encourage them to speak up and share what they see.

Do you find that certain people are not tech savvy and cannot covert to a virtual setting? How do you entice these people?

I have ran across those who are unfamiliar with a virtual setting, but none that refuse to learn. Perhaps I have been lucky, but even those I thought I would refuse technology are excited to learn. I suggest offering a helping hand on a 1:1 basis or offer a group training where everyone is invited.

Rebecca- fyi, the "refresh" link is not working on it's own to refresh my Comments page. To do that, I've been having to click the "Return to list" and then re-enter the forum by clicking "Join Conversation"... Is this happening to anyone else?

That's the funny thing about technology...you can test and test and test and think of every failure point possible and something can still go wrong even if you checked a dozen times. Thanks for rolling with it everyone.

One challenge I'm facing right now is board members who are unable to engage with planning because they are working to keep up with their professional challenges. We've also lost a couple of board members to pandemic-related job losses.

Patrick makes an excellent point. Although it can be hard to travel and be face to face sometimes, especially now. Maybe a forum like this with an open chat would allow members to contribute at the off hours they are available. If they still are not able to contribute a difficult conversation is needed as Patrick said.

Hi Kerrry - great question and very common concern. You're not alone! I would highly encourage you to approach those who have lost their jobs and ask if they want to remain involved. As the board, you can decide to extend their membership through the time they are without a job and require volunteering in return. During the time I was unemployed I found maintaining my involvement with the chapter, networking and volunteering helped me get through the rough patch. For those who are too immersed in keeping up in their professional challenges - have you asked them what they can commit to? At minimum attending calls/video chats? Help to find a replacement? It's sad to say, but sometimes volunteers use a crisis to take the opportunity to leave a volunteer role. Don't be afraid to have a tough conversation to really gauge their continued interest. It's ok to resign from volunteer work. I would rather an entire board resign because their heart is not in it than "hang on" because they are afraid to resign.

Have you found that there are certain tasks you cannot complete our are not effective in a virtual setting?

I think group discussions of more than 4 people can be very difficult to manage without setting rules of engagement. It's very easy to talk over one another which is why video is so important! You have the ability to see others who may want to speak. Let's go old school and start raising our hands on video calls when we want to talk.

How often do you recommend refreshing your sites webpage?

I would try to get in the habit of reviewing on a monthly or quarterly basis depending on how much content is on your website. Also, as people report outdated information or you see it, but sure to get it updated right away.
